    Measles: Vaccine Recommendations

    MMR-small.png

With the recent reports of measles outbreaks across the USA, we have been receiving many questions about when to get the MMR Vaccine and also if there are special circumstances to get the vaccine early for your child.  Here are the current recommendations from the CDC:

    1.  Routine MMR vaccination should be given at 12-15 months of age and again at 4-6 years of age.

    2.  If you are traveling internationally, then infants 6-11 months old need one dose prior to travel.  Also, any child 12 months and older, who has had 1 MMR, should get a 2nd dose 28days after the first dose if traveling internationally.

    3.  If your child does get an MMR shot early (between 6-11 months) he/she will still need the 2 routine doses at 12 months and 4 years to meet all recommendations for immunity to the diseases.

    Vaccines in the News

From a chicken pox outbreak in Walton to measles epidemics in New York and Washington state to an ongoing Hepatitis A outbreak in Kentucky, West Virginia and Ohio, vaccine preventable diseases are making a comeback as people choose to avoid vaccines.  As you know, we at Pediatric Associates believe in modern medical science and in protecting kids, including the very young and those with compromised immune systems. We believe immunizations are an essential part of child health.  Dr. Deis recently gave a great interview on Cincinnati Edition about the importance of vaccines which you can listen to HERE under "Chickenpox Outbreak at Northern Kentucky School, Student Sues from Cincinnati Edition".  You can also find more about the importance of vaccines from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

    Expanding Check-Up Hours this Spring

We know how challenging it can be to squeeze in all the responsibilities that you and your family have. Our patients have asked for more availability for school and routine check-ups later in the day and we heard you! Pediatric Associates is proud to announce that we will have availability for Tuesday and Thursday evening check-ups in the Crestview Hills office this spring and summer. We also have limited checkups available on Saturday mornings as well. We expect these appointments to be very popular, so call soon if you would like to take advantage of this opportunity.

    Patient Portal

Have you signed up for the patient portal? The portal will allow you to view your child's drug allergies, medications, growth charts, vaccines (including a forecast of upcoming shots), pay your bill, request a well or ill visit and even schedule a flu vaccine appointment!  We will also send some forms and documents to the portal for your convenience. Click here for instructions for obtaining an immunization record.

    Parenting Corner

It’s summertime! For some parents, that statement is a welcome relief from school, for other parents it might strike fear. No matter which parent you are (and maybe you are a little of both), it’s always good to start out the summer with a plan. Be intentional with your kids in establishing some guidelines for summer expectations, whether it’s reading time, outside time or screen time limits. If you would like more help in planning for a more peaceful summer, feel free to contact Kerry, our Parenting Specialist. She can help you create a plan that works best for you and your family. Thanks to a generous grant, Kerry’s services are complementary. She is located at our Crestview Hills Down Under location, and you can reach her at 513-570-0941 or kbrown@beechacres.org. You can also tune in for her Facebook live on May 29th at noon to ask questions or hear more about summer parenting.
